Main Info
AREQUIPA was founded on August 15, 1540, by Manuel Garcia de Carbajal. Its name derives from the Quechua phrase «Arequipai» which means «Yes, stay», and more than a simple coincidence, the name is a reality that remains in time, because in the streets, in the ashlar walls and in the attitude of the people, you can perceive a strange force, a rare impulse that invites you to stay in the city.
Located in the foothills of the western Andes and at the foot of the Misti volcano, Arequipa (2,350 m.a.s.l.), capital of the department of the same name, is a beautiful city, with large houses built in sillar, a material of petrified volcanic lava, with temples and convents defined by an original architectural style, and with magical countryside around it that give it a bucolic nuance.
In the Historic Center of Arequipa you can appreciate the purest Arequipa architectural style, which was consolidated at the end of the XVII century, from the superposition of the Italian baroque, the Spanish plateresque and the Andean originality.
The ancestral homes, churches and ancient convents were built in ashlar, a material between white and pearl, which when illuminated by the sun, produces a glow, a magnificent aura. For this reason, Arequipa is known as the «White City».
